In the present and future society, the focus is, and will be, on the development of competencies and life abilities for students. These life abilities imply a superior emotional intelligence and especially the capacity to confront stress and the positive accommodation to changes.
This is the reason why the educational and psychological counseling activities are so important for our kindergarten/school. The counseling department consists of a school psychologist, a clinician psychologist and a logoped. They are the ones that ensure the evaluation and counseling activities for the school’s students and teachers, but also for the parents, according to the code of their profession. A short presentation of the counseling activity consists of the following steps:
- To discuss with the teacher/parents about the children’s behavior in the group and kindergarten
- To observe the group community in order to identify possible inadequate behaviors or some unhealthy emotional manifestations
- To identify and implement in the teaching activities methods designed to prevent and/or stop the child’s unhealthy behaviors (counseling the teacher)
- To fill in an observation file in the case of problems that can’t be solved with only the help of the teacher
- To have individual discussions with the parents (identifying and presenting the problem, possible solutions)
- To implement a plan established together with the parent
Taking into consideration the type and gravity of the situation this process implies other steps, or on the contrary (some steps can be skipped); the psychological evaluation and the counseling programs are done with the parent’s approval.
The individual counseling activities are done without the parent’s approval only in a crisis situation, in order to diminish the stress or the negative emotions and as soon as possible, the parent will be informed.
Activities can be done also at the parent’s request, when he/she identifies changes in the child’s behavior, even if at school these changes don’t attract attention.
